Gorata Kgafela

Biographie:
I am a registered architect and the founder of a design and housing development firm, where I lead efforts in designing and developing affordable housing that meets the needs of diverse urban populations. While my work spans critical infrastructure projects such as data centers, revenue offices, and central banks, my true passion lies in creating sustainable multifamily housing across all income categories. My experience as an affordable housing developer has given me a deep understanding of the economic, social, and environmental dynamics shaping housing markets. This expertise and my global perspective allow me to approach housing challenges with a comprehensive, locally grounded, and globally informed view. My commitment to innovation in housing policy and development is reflected in my professional and academic pursuits. In addition to my role as a teaching fellow in urban economics and my MBA, I am also engaged in ongoing doctoral research that explores gamified policy formulation. This research, which focuses on developing more inclusive housing policies, is a testament to my proactive approach and dedication to improving housing conditions. I am also an active volunteer with Urban Plan, where I engage in fostering collaboration between communities and legislative bodies, enhancing participatory planning, and educating future leaders about the complexities of urban development. This experience has deepened my commitment to creating housing solutions that are both equitable and sustainable. Having held leadership roles in professional bodies, I have developed a solid foundation in governance and policy advocacy. I am eager to bring this experience to the Urban Land Institute and contribute my housing policy, development, and economics expertise. I am ready to collaborate with fellow leaders to address housing affordability, develop effective policies, and share best practices that promote equitable and sustainable housing solutions.
