Stephen Coulston
Biografía: Stephen Coulston, AIA, is a Managing Principal and leader in the national urban design and planning practice of Perkins&Will, a global design firm. An architect and urban designer with a passion for engaging with innovative communities, Coulston has spent his 30-year career working at the intersection of higher education, research, healthcare, government, and private sectors. With a focus on strategizing, planning, and designing the built form and natural environments, he is dedicated to creating transformative design and placemaking that results in more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive communities. Stephen is a long-time supporter of ULI, engaged with ULI Austin, ULI Colorado, and ULI Americas. He is presently the Governance Committee Chair for ULI Ausin, having recently served as the District Council Chair. Stephen previously volunteered as the Chair for Mission Advancement and Sponsorship Chair with ULI Austin. As Sponsorship Chair, Stephen helped restructure the sponsorship benefits and achieve record levels of local sponsorship commitments in support of the financial viability of the organization. As Mission Advancement Chair, during one of the most tumultuous times in our country’s history, he was a passionate advocate for ULI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion commitments that led to more DEI focused programs, conscientious expansion of equitable participation in program panels and leadership committee structures, and an expanded dialogue between ULI Austin leaders, members and the broader Austin community. As District Council Chair in the wake of major regional winter storms, droughts, and on-going heat waves, Stephen championed the creation of a new Strategic Council focusing on Local Climate Impacts and the role ULI members and its partners can play fostering more resilience strategies within built environment in Central Texas. Stephen holds a professional degree in architecture from Texas Tech University. Stephen is a frequent speaker, author, and contributor to numerous articles and publications featuring models, trends, and best practices in urban design and planning. He has served in varying capacities on committees, boards and/or executive councils with the Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Architects, American Planning Association, Society for College & University Planning, International Town & Gown Association, Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, and the Association of University Research Parks. Stephen currently resides in Denver, and prior to Perkins&Will, spent almost three decades in planning, design, and management for firms in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.
