Gary Derck
Biografía: Professional Background: Gary currently serves as CEO of Powder Mountain in Eden Utah. HIs Mountainsprings, LLC development management company oversees community development, second/vacation home product development, entitlement, acquisition/disposition and strategic growth initiatives for the Purgatory Resort/Durango Mountain Resort community in Durango, CO, the Kirkwood Mountain Resort community in South Lake Tahoe, CA and the Angel Fire Resort community in Angel Fire, NM.. Gary has also been involved in strategic operational initiatives and development/redevelopment of Caneel Bay, USVI, Arizona, Taos Ski Valley, in Taos, NM and numerous other resort projects. He served for 16 years as the CEO of Purgatory Resort/Durango Mountain Resort and for 8 years as the CEO of Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Gary has secured approvals and led the operations and development of over 2500 new resort residences and 400,000 sf of commercial space in one of the largest and most comprehensive resort community portfolios in the ski industry. He has pioneered innovative solutions in resort/second home product, club & master association amenity structures, environmental programs, entitlements & approvals, system-built construction, financing, operational models and organizational structures. Previously, Gary served as CEO/General Manager of Loeb Enterprises, LLC, a master-planned community developer based in Reno, Nevada, which developed Coyote Springs (a 42,000-acre, mixed-use golf community near Las Vegas) and Wingfield Springs (a 1600-acre golf community in Reno). He was also the Director of Development at EDAW (now AECOM), one of the largest and most experienced development consulting firms in the United States based in San Francisco, CA. He began his career as a Vice President with EDSA in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Professional Interests and Expertise: Resort/Hospitality Operations, Resort/Community Development, Single Family, Condominium, Fractional/PRC Residential Development, Resort/Community Planning/Design, System-Built Construction, Entitlement/Permitting Education / Accomplishments: Gary has a BA from Cornell and an MBA from the University of Miami. Gary’s career is unique in that he evolved from a resort designer, to a resort developer, to a resort operator … and has developed/operated ski, golf and beach-oriented resorts in a wide variety of markets. He pioneered a unique synergistic business model that allows operations and development to leverage the benefits (and mitigate the risks) of one another. Gary has served as Chair and Council Counselor for the mulitple flights of Urban Land Institute’s Resort Development Council, currently serves as the Chair of the Durango/La Plata County Airport Commission and numerous local HOA and civic association boards.
