ULI Nashville Resilient Land Use Cohort Technical Assistance Panel Presentation
Enhancing Heat Resilience and Equity in the Wedgewood-Houston and Chestnut Hill Neighborhoods
Extreme heat is a significant public health and equity concern in Nashville, Tennessee. Meanwhile, retrofits of the aging building stock and implementation of design, land use, and construction strategies for new development can help mitigate its effects by reducing local urban temperatures and maintaining comfortable and safe inside temperatures.
As a peer city in the Resilient Land Use Cohort (RLUC), the Metro Government of Nashville and Davidson County, the Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC), and Core Development asked ULI to convene a virtual Technical Assistance Panel (vTAP) on June 8th – 11th, 2021, to formulate recommendations on how to equitably respond to extreme heat and to mitigate its health and economic threats. The vTAP chair John Vick (TN Department of Health) and panelists Kevin Augustyn (North ADBRS Morning Star), Jillian Burgess (RWDI), Adam Freed (Bloomberg Associates), Clay Haynes (One Public Square) Sadhu Johnston (Fmr. City of Vancouver), Abena Ojetayo (City of Tallahassee), and Erica Weeks (Hasting Architecture) presented their recommendations at the end of the 3.5-day vTAP on June 11, 2021.
