Biography:
Gus B. Bauman, Partner with the Beveridge & Diamond Law Firm, is a nationally-known land use lawyer. His practice focuses on land use law and policy issues. Beveridge & Diamond focuses on enviromental law and litagation. Bauman joined Beveridge & Diamond as a Partner in 1988. From 1989 to 1993, Bauman left Beveridge & Diamond to serve as the Chairman of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, one of the pre-eminent land use agencies in the United States. As Chairman of the Planning Commision, he headed an agency with jurisdiction over Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, which borders Washington, D.C. and are home to more than 1.5 million people. Between 1979 and 1988, Bauman was litigation counsel for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and head of its legal affairs department. He was one of the lead attorneys and a key strategist in a series of land use cases heard and decided by the United States Supreme Court concerning the taking of private property by government and the constitutionality of development exacttions. His work led to two landmark 1987 Supreme Court decisions in land use law.
