Biography:
Andrew Coats, P.E. , leads the Development Management team in Alt-RE-Americas Equity Investment Management for BlackRock Real Estate Advisors, based in New York. Andrew's focus is overseeing value-add and opportunistic real estate development, design and construction in the Americas, on behalf of Equity Investment Management . With over eighteen years of experience in real estate development, design and construction, Andrew leads a team bringing a technical foundation to BlackRock’s real estate investment efforts. Prior to joining BlackRock in 2015, Andrew held various roles in development and design in the U.S. and Europe, including a project management lead with Rudin Management, a New York based real estate developer and Buro Happold, a UK based design engineering firm. Andrew's experience includes projects in the multi-family residential, commercial, retail, marine, civil, transportation and cultural sectors, with projects as varied as the High Line park in NYC, the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, the PNC Headquarters in Pittsburgh, the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh and the Orange County Great Park. Andrew's experience also includes a wide geographic range with projects completed across Europe, the Middle East, North and South America and the Caribbean. Education: Andrew graduated with a BS in Engineering from the University of Texas in 1998 and an MSt from Cambridge University in 2007. Work Experience: 1. 1998 – 2000 Structural Engineer Thornton Tomasetti Dallas, TX Engineering project lead on the Meadows Art Museum in Dallas and the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth 2. 2000 - 2002 Structural Engineer HLW New York, NY Engineering project lead on various commercial and retail projects around the tri-state area. 3. 2002 – 2013 Associate Principal Buro Happold NYC, UK, Riyadh Engineering lead, project lead and client representative on numerous civil, commercial, luxury mulit-family residential, marine and retail projects in North America, Euope and the Middle East. Founded and ran Buro Happold’s project management team, running design and development services on over $2 billion worth of new development. 4. 2013 – 2015 Project Manager Rudin Management New York, NY – Project manager on several large scale residential and commercial development or value add projects in NYC. 5. 2015 – 2017 Director BlackRock RE Advisors New York, NY – Leads Development Management Group within the BlackRock real estate platform, overseeing all technical aspects of acquisitions, developments and dispositions across North America. 2017 - Present Z Capital - Operating Partner Overseeing any and all real estate activities across Z Capital portfolio companies, focusing primarily on the areas of Hospitality and Gaming. Civic Activities: Involvement in the Structural Engineers Association of NY, American Society of Civil Engineers, The Architectural League, Brooklyn Heights Association and the Spence School.
