Biography:
Fred Clarke FAIA, JIA #13988 November 2002 Fred Clarke is one of the founders of Cesar Pelli & Associates where he is Project Principal and Designer. He is also responsible for the development of the firm's structure, and its unique systems of project organization and delivery. Among his ongoing professional interests has been the effect of the contemporary architectural program on the fabric of campuses and cities. Mr. Clarke met Cesar Peli in 1969 while still a student and, upon graduating with honors from the University of Texas, joined Gruen Associates in Los Angeles where Mr. Pelli was Partner for Desigh. For the following seven years, Mr. Clarke served as Associate Principal for the design of the United States Embassy in Tokyo; the School of Music for Yale University; and, the headquarters for Daehan Kyoyuk Insurance in Seoul, Korea. Over the past 25 years, Mr. Clarke has been responsible for commissions covering a wide range of programs including the design of three of the world's largest completed mixed-use developments to date: the World Financial Center in New York; Canary Wharf in London; and, Kuala Lumpur City Centre in Malaysia. Mr. Clarke has also srved as a Sesign Principal for the nearly 5 million square meters of office tower space built by our office. Recent projects include Citigroup and Lehman Brothers Towers in London, England; South Station Air Rights Development in Boston; and the International Finance Centre, currently under construction, which will be the new headquarters for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. He is currently a design principal for the new Goldman Sachs Headquarters. Recent international experience of completed headquater buildings include Cheung Kong Center in Hong Kong; and, headquarters for NTT, NHK and Mitsui Fudosan in Japan. A career-long teacher of desigh, Fred Clarke has been on the caculties of the University of California at Los Angeles, Rice University and Yale University. He continues as Guest Critic at several major universities. He was the Keynote Speaker at the VIII Bienal de Arquitectura de Quito, the Colegio Arquitectos de Chille and, most recently, the Fifth International Conference on Tall Buildings in Hong Kong. He has chaired design juries and panels for many professional organizations, including the Urban Land Institute and national, state and regional affiliates of the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Clarke served as Guest Lecturer and Speaker at the Iberian-American Forum of Architecture & Urbanism of Sao Paulo; The Asis Society in New York; and , most recently, Soft City, a symposium on the unique role of Tokyo in the future of Urbanism. Cesar Pelli & Associates has received numerous awards for design excellence and, in 1989, was the recipient of the Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. In 1992, Mr. Clarke was elected to the College of Fellows of the Americcan Institute of Architects. INn 1997, he became a First Class Registered Architect in Japan, a member of the Japan Institute of Architects and a Fellow of the Philippine Institute of Architects.
