Paul Ostergaard

Managing Principal
Urban Design Associates
Biography:
March 2007 PAUL OSTERGAARD, AIA Managing Principal, Urban Design Associates As a managing principal, one of Paul's primary passions is the design of mixed-use neighborhoods and districts as a method for revitalizing downtowns and building sustainable new towns. He works from the point of view that strategic placement of major public investments - such as new assembly venues, new streets and parks, transit, and institutions - can and does stimulate private investment in housing and commercial uses. Paul has focused on transforming industrial waterfronts, brownfield sites and deteriorated urban areas into vital new precincts and neighborhoods. He has developed regional transit and land use visions to encourage sustainable and focused growth to strengthen existing towns and cities. Paul has been responsible, for the architectural design of corporate facilities, institutional buildings, university facilities, community centers, municipal buildings, and multi-family residential buildings. Paul's exceptional design and perspective drawing skills enable him to translate ideas into three-dimensional imagery that is easily understood by clients and the public. This talent is especially valuable for urban design projects, where Paul's participation in on-site charrettes enables diverse constituencies to readily visualize how an existing neighborhood can be transformed. Projects under Paul's direction include the Cincinnati Riverfront Master Plan, Cincinnati, Ohio; Pittsburgh Northshore Master Plan, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Downtown Birmingham Master Plan, Birmingham, Alabama; Fort Norfolk Master Plan, Norfolk, Virginia; Coliseum District Master Plan, Hampton, Virginia; South Lake Union Master Plan, Seattle, WA; First Ward Master Plan, Charlotte, NC; Crawford Square, Pittsburgh, PA; Broadway Overlook, Baltimore, MD; Wheeling Hope VI, Wheeling, WV; UCSB Master Plan, Santa Barbara, CA; Pack Square Master Plan, Asheville, NC; Wilma Dykeman Riverway Master Plan, Asheville, NC; Genitoy Est, Bussy Saint Georges, France; Rue Michelet, San Quentin En Yvelines, France; and the Fairgrounds Master Plan, Suffolk, Virginia. Current project include the West Don Lands Precinct Plan, Toronto, Canada; Storrs Center Pattern Book, Storrs, CN; Coopers Crossing Pattern Book, Camden, NJ; and Silvertip Resort Phase I, Canmore, Alberta. Paul earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from Carnegie Mellon University where he has also served as a design instructor and visiting critic. A recipient of the Stewardson Traveling Fellowship, Paul has traveled extensively exploring urban design and architecture in Western Europe. Past President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Paul is also a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Urban Land Institute. The American Society of Architectural Perspectivists honored him with their Award for Excellence in Graphic Representation of Architecture. Member Directory  Arrow
