Benjamin Shepherd
Biography: As a Director and co-leader of Atelier Ten’s largets US office location, Ben has extensive experience in sustainability consulting, masterplanning, urban ecology, and green development projects. Since joining Atelier Ten’s New York office in 2006, he has consulted on more than two-hundred high-performance projects for a wide range of clients, including: the Smithsonian, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, Museum of the American Revolution, Battery Park City Authority, Newark Airport/ Port Authority of NY/NJ, NYU Langone Medical Center, Harvard Business School, MIT, Northwestern University, NYU, Princeton University, Washington University in St. Louis, Yale University, and the Theatre for a New Audience. Ben is also a co-chair of the ULI New York Infrastructure Council. The Council's mission is to examine the major urban systems needed by the City of New York and the surrounding region, in order to function and prosper: transportation, telecom, energy, water supply, waste treatment and storm drainage. As such, the Council promotes sustainable policies and practices which impact development in the New York region. Prior to joining Atelier Ten, Ben worked at Rocky Mountain Institute, and for Battle McCarthy Consulting Engineers.Ben holds an MA in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and a BA in Environmental Science from Northland College. At Yale, Ben combined environmental coursework with classes at the School of Architecture. As a student, he participated in the design process of the first carbon neutral and LEED Platinum project, Kroon Hall. He also conducted research under noted author and Professor Stephen Kellert on developing an understanding of the connections between human and natural systems as published in Building for Life: Designing & Understanding the Human-Nature Connection, 2005. At Northland College, a leading environmental and liberal arts institution in Northern Wisconsin, Ben was elected Student Body President, representing student interests to the college administration, participating on numerous committees, facilitating weekly senate meetings, and managing a budget and eight student staff. He was named to the Dean’s Hall for Outstanding Service, participated in “Trekking Japan” a four-week philosophy trip, and played NCAA Division III/ NAIA baseball. Since 2009 in his spare time, Ben has taught master’s level, sustainable design based coursework. Including a technology elective course, ""The Intersection of Sustainable Architecture and Infrastructure Planning"" at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art & Planning. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he teaches two second-year master’s level courses: Environmental Controls Systems and a studio course, Integrated Building Systems. Previously, Ben taught core courses on environmental design and building services at the Yale School of Architecture, in addition to giving guest lectures and critiques at Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania.
