Biography: Mary Smith Senior Vice President Walker Parking Consultants/Engineers Indianapolis, IN Mary Smith is a Senior Vice President and Director of Parking Consulting for Walker Parking Consultants. Since joining Walker in 1975, Mary has been actively involved in all phases of parking planning and design for parking projects throughout the world. In 2010 alone, she consulted on projects in China, Russia, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Korea. Mary’s particular areas of expertise include pedestrian and vehicular circulation, flow capacity and wayfinding in mega-parking structures (including a 10,250 space structure in Anaheim, CA), accessibility, and integrating shared parking, parking management and parking operations into the parking design. Mary is widely acknowledged as one of the leading parking planners and functional designers in the world. She is co-author of PARKING STRUCTURES: Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Repair, now in its third edition. Elected to the Parking Consultants Council (PCC) in 1984, Mary has led the development of multiple PCC publications and multiple chapters for the ULI/NPA Dimensions of Parking. She authored the parking chapter for the 2nd and 3rd editions (2000, 2009) of ITE’s Transportation Planning Handbook and the parking section of APA’s Planning and Urban Design Standards (2006). She was also the lead author for the second edition of Shared Parking (2005) commissioned by the Urban Land Institute and the International Council of Shopping Centers. She was author of a “Research In Brief” for the Department of Justice on CPTED in parking facilities and served on a blue ribbon committee to develop guidelines for security at Federal Buildings following the Oklahoma City tragedy. She also served as representative for ITE, IPI and NPA to COST 342, a European Union project that studied the experience gained internationally with the effects of governmental parking policies.
