Biography:
Terry A. Willis, AIA, spent the first half of his career as a designer and project manager for Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) on major national and international mixed-use projects including Edmonton Centre in Edmonton, Alberta; Nothwest Frontier Province Agricultural University in Peshawar, Pakistan; Asian Development Bank HQ in Manila, Philippines; and Hotel Arts in Barcelona, Spain. Willis spent the next 16 years as Denver studio manager for 4240 Architecture (formerly Urban Design Group) and was an associate principal and in the firm. He specializes in the redevelopment design of Brownfield sites into complex urban mixed-use centers and transit-oriented developments, such as East 29th Avenue Town Center at Stapleton (Denver), the redevelopment of the Gates rubber factory into a TOD hub (Denver), the St. Julien Hotel and Municipal Parking garage in Boulder, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation headquarters into a TOD at a Rail Runner stop in Santa Fe, NM. He is currently the principal of the Denver office of KTGY Architecture & Planning, designing mixed-use and multi-family projects throughout the Denver metro region. His focus is currently on city building around Stapleton's Central Park Station. Willis strives to lead project teams in directions that help heal the land and repair the fabric of the city through design solutions that humanize space, create a sense of place, support the varied patterns of human life, and are expressive of purpose. Willis has been an active member of the AIA Denver Urban Design Committee where he collaborated in the study of TODs in advance of Denver's ambitious FasTracks light rail initiative. This study led to the crafting of TOD evaluation criteria and culminated in his role as co-executive producer of the educational film "Transit Oriented Development: Shaping the Great American City."
