ULI Hong Kong: Activating Underutilized Urban Open Spaces for Sustainability in Hong Kong
In partnership with the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, ULI Hong Kong has embarked on a year-long initiative to identify, improve, and activate underutilized urban spaces in Hong Kong. Through mapping, research, and case studies, the project aims to exemplify the possibilities of enhancing small open spaces for sustainability and social wellness in a high-density city facing space challenges. This can only be achieved through collaboration with the public and private sectors.
Project Framework:
- Mapping. Map and identify underutilized open spaces in the northern part of Hong Kong Island. This is to gain a better understanding of the current state of open spaces and to track progress on a continuing basis. The campaign will help raise public awareness on this topic.
- Prioritizing. Identify 10 sites as case studies for improvement, greening, and activation. A technical assistance panel (TAP) composed of member leaders and experts in the field will be convened to look into policy and solutions to accelerate the pace of open-space activation. A report will be published to serve as a road map for policy, investment, and management strategies to improve urban open spaces in Hong Kong.
- Enabling. Develop a toolkit to help communities and public- and private-sector owners implement strategies to green underutilized open spaces by providing case studies and best practices in Hong Kong, the Asia Pacific, and other regions.
- Call to Actions. Select three of the 10 sites previously identified for fundraising and activation. This is to showcase how to implement the strategies for transformative impact and to elevate the business case for investing in urban open spaces. A citywide engagement campaign will be conducted to raise public awareness and promote the adoption of the report and the toolkit.
Key Deliverables:
Thanks to the support from the Bank of Americas, ULI members, and various community groups, we have made some good progress. The year-one deliverables allow us to set a foundation to further our efforts in greening and activating underutilized urban open spaces in Hong Kong.
