ULI Case Studies Woodwards Vancouver, BC
Video Summary: Woodwards is a multi-use urban development project in the gas town area of Vancouver, British Columbia. Located in what was once considered the poorest postal code in Canada, the project faced the challenge of selling market weight, affordable condos in a problem filled neighborhood. From the efforts of private and public partnerships between the city, a university and developers, the town rediscovered itself through the renovations of the once for the closed and vacant buildings. The new site includes multiple residential units, a daycare, retail stores and public spaces. Acknowledging the social tensions that come with gentrification, Woodwards made sure to effectively and carefully interface with community. It made sure to meet halfway by providing social gathering events and resources for the community to ensure transparency and inclusivity during the transformation.
