Laurence Netherton

Biografía: Laurence Netherton is a forty year real estate investment and development veteran based in Newport Beach California. Since 1981 he has worked in the acquisition, entitlement and development of land in California for in-fill, master planned communities and mixed use projects. The design and market positioning of those developments have ranged from all residential market segments to mixed-use and business park properties. Many of those projects incorporated special purposes such as retirement / second homes, biotech, viticulture, golf, brownfield remediation and environmental preservation. In the early 1970’s, he was with a diversified real estate company based in Chicago where he was initially worked in the underwriting, syndication and asset management of limited partnerships holding tax-sheltered, government-assisted multi-family housing projects, many developed under HUD’s Operation Breakthrough program. He later was responsible for the financial restructuring, condominium conversion and single family development for a broad portfolio of properties throughout the mid-west and east coast. Mr. Netherton is a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning, his Masters Degree in Urban Planning and his Master of Business Administration. While in graduate school he worked as project manager for a real estate market research company. Twenty five years of his career have been with the real estate development subsidiaries of two Fortune 100 companies, mostly in senior management positions. Mr. Netherton has been a long-term member of the Urban Land Institute Community Development Council and has served on a variety of ULI committees and task forces. Locally, he is past chair of the Orange County / Inland Empire District Council. Mr. Netherton is co-author of the fourth edition of “Real Estate Development: Principles and Practice”, published by the Urban Land Institute, and is also co-author of “The Business of Master Planned Communities”, in the book, Trends and Innovations in Master Planned Communities published by the ULI in 1998. For seven years he taught the course “Master Land Planning” in the Certificate Program in Light Construction and Development Management at the University of California, Irvine.
