Albert Chan
Biography: Albert Chan has a long-term passion for the development and design of sustainable urban communities, urban regeneration, and placemaking. He is the Director of Planning and Development at Shui On Land (SOL) and Chief Sustainability Officer of the Group. From 1997 onwards, he led the masterplanning and design of SOL “Tiandi” urban regeneration communities in China, including Shanghai Xintiandi, Foshan Lingnan Xintiandi, Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC), Rui Hong Xintiandi, Hongqiao Xintiandi, Wuhan Xintiandi, Panlong Xintiandi. These community developments have received 11 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Global and Asia Pacific Awards for Excellence, plus multiple awards from MIPIM, AIA, CTBUH, World Bank, CRED and other organizations. All large SOL communities received LEED neighborhood development Gold level certifications, and 98% of SOL assets are sustainability certified. Shanghai Xintiandi Community received the world’s first WELL Community certification in 2019, and SOL is on track to reduce its scope 1,2, 3 goals per SBTi approved 2030 targets Albert has been an active member at Urban Land Institute (ULI) for a long time. He Chaired the ULI Mainland Council 2017-19, has been a member of the ULI Trustee , ULI Advisory Panel member, and ULI Global and Asia Pacific Award for Excellence jury, and ULI Asia Pacific Product Councils. Albert chaired the 2023 ULI Global Award for Excellence Jury and chaired the 2024 ULI Asia Pacific Award for Excellence Jury. Albert is an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (Hon. FAIA), a Chartered Member of Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), member of RIBA China100, the Architectural Society of China (ASC) Committee for Urbanism and Mixed-use Buildings, and Shanghai Architectural Society. Albert is a member of International Panel of Experts (IPE) of Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) 2023-25. He served as advisor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Guangzhou Campus Development Board, and serves as advisor to district governments on various urban regeneration projects in Shanghai. He co-chairs the jury for the China Real Estate Design Competition (CRED) since 2020. He has been a juror AIA, RIBA, CTBUH and other development and design award programs. Albert holds MS (UD) from Columbia University, M. Arch from U.C. Berkeley, MBA from New York University, and B. Arch from U of Minnesota.
