Biographie :
Tanya Stern is Deputy Planning Director at the Montgomery County (MD) Planning Department where she oversees five divisions responsible for countywide housing policy, zoning, growth management, transportation planning and historic preservation; real estate, economic and demographic analysis; IT/GIS; and agency management services including budgeting, HR and communications. She also is part of the Core Team for Thrive Montgomery 2050, Montgomery Planning’s update to the county’s General Plan that was launched in 2019. Previously, Ms. Stern served for 14 years in the Government of the District of Columbia, including eight years at the DC Office of Planning (OP). Her last role at OP was as Deputy Director overseeing neighborhood planning and urban design. She also served as Project Director to launch the current DC Comprehensive Plan update and led the integration of the topic of resilience into the Comprehensive Plan as well as updates to 12 Plan chapters. Ms. Stern earlier served as OP’s Chief of Staff and in agency program and performance management and budget development roles in the Executive Office of the Mayor and other District government agencies. Additionally, she has 11 years of non-profit sector experience. Ms. Stern holds a master’s in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania and is certified through the American Institute of Certified Planners and as a Certified Public Manager. She is also a member of Lambda Alpha International and the Urban Land Institute. Ms. Stern recently was the co-chair of ULI Washington’s Placemaking Initiative Council, a role she co-founded and held for three years; a past co-chair of ULI Washington’s Initiative Council Steering Committee; and a past member of ULI Washington’s Membership Committee. Ms. Stern has served on local and national ULI advisory panels. She is currently a member of ULI Washington’s Prince George’s County Initiative Council. Additionally, she is the co-chair of the Connected DMV Planning, Standards and Economic Development Solutions Group supporting the Connected DMV COVID-19 Strategic Renewal Task Force developing regional economic recovery strategies for the Washington, DC region.
