Report Summary: "Unlocking Accessory Dwelling Unit in Chicago" presents recommendations to encourage the creation of accessory dwelling units in single-family homes and 2-4 flats as well as larger multi-family residential buildings to increase the supply of housing units in Chicago. Because of their smaller sizes and utilization of non-primary spaces such as basements and backyards, ADUs are likely be more affordable than regular units in their neighborhoods, thereby improving housing affordability. A key deliverable of ULI Chicago's ADU Initiative, this report was developed over the course of a year by engaging nearly 100 stakeholders including industry and community experts and City of Chicago staff and officials.
